Select a bicycle shop with a large variety - Try on a lot of different helmets manufacturers. Find the best fitting manufacturer there all different. The best way to gauge comfort and fit is by comparison.
Envolve your child in choosing a helmet - they will be more likely to wear it if they has a say.
Only consider helmets approved for cycling.
The helmet must be snug but comfortable - Using foam pads and adjusting the chin strap will help insure a good fit.
The helmet should not shift around – be sure that the chin strap fits around the ear and under the chin, comfortable and snug.
The helmet should not sit forward or back
The straps should be snug
Always use the chin strap!
Start early – from the tricycle on up.
Explain why they should wear a helmet – “It protects your wonderful little brain”
Encourage parents in your neighborhood to wear helmets
Never let your child wear a helmet not approved for cycling
Don't ware other head gear under your helmet, ball caps, toques, barrettes, etc...
